A Totally New Approach to the New Year’s Resolution

We can’t believe it, but this week marks the end of 2015! Every year we make new year’s resolutions that we just can’t seem to keep, so for 2016 we decided to take a look at what’s really important to us. To make 2016 the most meaningful year yet we decided to make two lists, one of things that we want to let go of in the year, and one of things that we want to do more of.

Things to Let go of in the New Year

People holding you back

We all have that one friend who isn’t exactly the most supportive, this year surround yourself only with friends who root for you to be your best self.

Grudges

In the same vein, let go of all the grudges you’ve been holding on to, they’re a waste of time and energy, you will feel much more refreshed once you let go. Know that letting go doesn’t mean you agree with what happened, it just means you’re ready to move on.

Not having enough time

Look at all the things you’ve committed to and remove the ones that no longer are bringing you joy. Most of us don’t have enough time, but doing this audit will allow you to make time for the things in life you want more of.

Your phone addiction

We know you’ve heard this one before, but we’re gonna say it anyway – your phone! We’re not saying that you should let go of it COMPLETELY, but make a concerted effort to make sure it stays in your purse during family and friend time. Make a game out of it! When you’re out to meals with your friends, make it a rule that the first person to touch his or her phone has to foot the bill.

Blaming others

It’s always easy to shirk responsibility, but if you never own up to your mistakes, you’ll never grow.

Constant complaining

If you feel the need to complain, something isn’t working. In 2016 make that change, the complaining will naturally stop soon thereafter.

Things to do More of this Year

Make more in-person hang time

This one has a lot of overlap with our things to let go of list, but it’s so important. Spend more time with those you love, in person. In our digital age, it’s easy to facetime, text, or even skype instead of seeing one another physically. But to create a true bond and understand others’ non-verbal communication (body language, tone of voice) in-person time is crucial.

DO more of what you love!

The happiest people are those of us who spend time doing things they’re passionate about. Whether or not you’re in love with your job, keep doing things that bring you joy- make time for them. Who knows, it may turn into a career one day…

Take that trip you’ve been dying to take!

Sure it may be a little over your budget, but the happiness and memories that will result are both well worth it.

Get healthier

We all know that one of the most popular new year’s resolutions is “to get in shape”—it’s not a top resolution for nothing! Exercising more, and eating well, will not only improve your health, but also your overall mindset.

Get out more!

Yep, you read that right, meeting new people can help your well-being AND your career!

What do you need to let go of in 2016? And what will you be adding more of?
